Tutor Training Our literacy council relies on the dedicated support from our volunteer tutors. Our training is conducted after hours and on the weekends making it easy for both working and non-working persons to attend. Part of our training is conducted on-line. If you are considering becoming a volunteer tutor and changing someone’s life forever there are three steps involved.
At our orientation you will find out who our students are, what our program is all about and how you can get involved. We will show you an overview of the techniques we use with our students and reassure you that you need not have any former teaching experience to become a volunteer tutor. 2. Complete our tutor certification training The Faulkner County Literacy Council provides a comprehensive 22-hour tutor certification program. Once you have completed the program you will be a certified tutor in Adult Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language. Our training program combines on-line self-paced class work with on site classes conducted by a certified Proliteracy trainer. 3. Our tutors are matched one-to-one with a student Tutors are matched to students based on your schedule and availability. We do ask that you meet with your student a minimum of 1 hour at a time twice a week. Studies show that students learn more and are better able to retain what they learn when the time between tutoring sessions is less than 4 days apart. Additional Tutor Support Services In addition to the initial tutor training Faulkner County Literary Council is committed to continuing to support your efforts as a tutor. We do that in the following ways: o Quarterly tutor support workshops o Council newsletters o Annual Volunteer recognition event o Invitation to all Faulkner County Literacy Council functions and fundraisers o Verizon Literacy Campus o 6-months free trial membership to ProLiteracy America’s tutor support website
